Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
