In a initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
