The goal seemed to secured a crucial win for West Ham in their battle against relegation. Brighton, awoken by the conceded goal, pushed forward, coming close when Maximilian Kilman nearly turned the ball into his own goal.

Given that stoppage-time drama are commonplace at the Amex, the home supporters kept a glimmer of expectation. This belief was justified in during closing stages. Amid a chaotic penalty area melee, Jan Paul van Hecke displayed composure to pass the ball into the area, where Georginio Rutter arrived to blast it into the roof of the net. The equaliser triggered rapturous scenes from the Brighton contingent, while it dealt a crushing setback to the Hammers' safety hopes.
The draw does little to alleviate the drop zone fears surrounding the London club, who stay firmly involved in the fight at the foot of the table. Meanwhile for Albion, it is another example of their never-say-die spirit, but also underscores the erratic performances that continue holding back their campaign.
