Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
